Fountain made from Orosei marble in various finishes:
shot-blasted and satinised
What is the story behind this special fountain?
Of course it started with an interesting idea, but the whole planning involved a fascinating challenge. When the current owners came to me and asked me to realise a childhood dream in the form of a fountain that would fit in their garden in a simple and elegant manner without taking up too much space, there was no draft plan or project, just a simple drawing. In addition, they wanted its shape to portray symbols from ancient Sardinia. Starting from that drawing, I immediately realised that by choosing the shape of a diamond I could provide my clients with a fountain that was not only beautiful to look at, but also functioned as a small swimming pool – a symbiosis of symbolism, beauty and practicality.
Symbolism, because it depicts an ancient Sardinian boat with water jets in the form of a sail resting on a bridge that represents the passage of life.
Beauty, because its shapes fit harmoniously into the garden without in any way altering the balance between nature and architecture.
Practicality, because it allows the owners to use it as a small swimming pool.
Starting with these thoughts, I first of all made a 1:10 scale drawing. From that drawing, I then created full-size templates to realistically show the dimensions of the base and pool edge realised in solid 20 cm thick blocks.
After the challenge of the construction, parts of which we have documented with photographs, we then had the task of installing the fountain in the existing garden. This was an extremely difficult proposition in terms of the handling and installation, not just because of weight of the individual slabs, but also because of the presence of numerous plants.
